When something is wrong
Ear treatment
If your pet is scratching its ears or shaking its head more than usual, it may have an ear infection, one of the most common health problems in pets.
When to come in
An untreated ear infection does not clear up on its own. It can narrow the ear canal and lead to an aural haematoma or inflammation of the middle and inner ear.

How we treat it
Ear swab test
Otitis externa can be caused by bacteria, fungi or ear mites. The vet prescribes medication based on the swab results.
Ear cleaning
Before medication, we often recommend an ear cleaner to remove excess wax. Without cleaning, the medication may not reach the ear canal.
Follow-up check
At the end of treatment we check the ears again. Anti-inflammatory medication reduces redness and pain, but only an examination shows whether the source of the infection has been cleared. Sometimes a longer course of treatment is needed.
If the inflammation keeps coming back
We look for the underlying cause: food or environmental allergy, hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease and others.

After your visit
Treatment at home
To stop the infection coming back, follow the vet's instructions until your pet has fully recovered, even if the symptoms clear up sooner.
