Raised eye pressure is often a sign of glaucoma. It is a deceptive disease: at first the animal is not in pain, the eye is not red or watery, and there are no other signs that would worry you enough to see a vet.
Chlamydophila infection, previously known as chlamydiosis, is the most common cause of conjunctivitis in cats. It affects around 5–10% of cats.
Dental disease can cause serious problems for animals, just as it can for people. It usually starts with plaque: if it is not removed within 3–4 days, it hardens into tartar and causes inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis.
A cat's blood type matters to breeders. In the first day of life, a type B queen passes antibodies to her kittens in her colostrum, and these can kill a type A kitten.
Mammary tumours are one of the most common health problems in older unspayed females. They are also the most common type of tumour in dogs.
Ear disease, also called otitis, is a very common problem in dogs. In some dogs it becomes almost constant, and in severe cases surgery may even be needed to relieve the symptoms.
Your own doctor always measures your blood pressure, and it matters just as much for animals. Hypertension in dogs and cats is usually a result of another disease and may cause no outward signs at all.
Ticks are arachnids, and a tick bite can cause serious health problems for a dog. We explain how to protect your pet, which diseases ticks carry and what to do if you find a bite.
Vaccination protects your pet from life-threatening infectious diseases. It is easier to understand why young animals are vaccinated several times, and why vaccines are repeated later, once you know how immunity works.
Panleukopenia and infectious respiratory disease are contagious cat diseases that vaccination protects against. We describe how they spread and show up, and what to expect before and after vaccination.
To keep your new pet healthy and feeling well, it needs regular vaccination, deworming and protection from fleas and other parasites.
What to know before mating your cat, how to care for her during pregnancy and what to watch for during the birth, so that the kittens are born healthy and grow up strong. Advice from vet Rasa Savickaitė.
A dog's nutritional needs change throughout its life. Dogs do many different jobs, so their energy needs vary widely. Their weight varies too: a Chihuahua weighs around 1 kg on average, while a St Bernard can weigh up to 115 kg.
Puppies naturally use their mouths when they play and interact, but sharp little teeth sinking into your heel or elbow are no fun. Your puppy needs to learn how to use its mouth appropriately. Obedience training, activities that meet its needs, rewarding good behaviour and interrupting unwanted biting all help.
A puppy is born knowing nothing about people or the world we live in: cars, vacuum cleaners, bicycles. If it does not get the chance to meet people, animals and everyday objects, it may grow up timid, anxious and unsociable. You can prevent this by starting socialisation as early as possible.
Most puppies are friendly and playful, but as they mature they can become harder to manage. Genetics play a part in behaviour, but an adult dog's character is also shaped by how you treat your puppy, how you train it and how you manage it.
Neutering and spaying are two different operations. Neutering a male cat removes the testicles, while spaying a female removes the ovaries and uterus. Both prevent unwanted kittens and lower the risk of some diseases.
Male dogs are neutered and female dogs are spayed. Both operations prevent unwanted puppies and can lower the risk of some reproductive diseases.
