Glaucoma: why eye pressure is worth measuring

Raised eye pressure is often a sign of glaucoma. It is a deceptive disease: at first the animal is not in pain, the eye is not red or watery, and there are no other signs that would worry you enough to see a vet.

How the disease progresses

Clinical signs only appear later, as the disease progresses: the affected eye becomes enlarged, its colour may change and the animal becomes listless.

Glaucoma that is not diagnosed in time leads to a number of painful eye conditions and is a common cause of blindness in animals. Even once the animal has gone blind, its quality of life suffers badly: constant severe pain makes it listless, and the affected eye has to be removed.

Based on clinical signs alone, glaucoma is usually diagnosed only at a late stage, when it may be too late to help the animal.

Measuring eye pressure

That is why regular eye pressure checks are an important way of preventing glaucoma. Vilnius Vet has a new veterinary tonometer that measures eye pressure quickly, accurately and painlessly. Animals often do not even react to the device, and no painkillers or sedatives are needed.

Eye pressure is measured at Vilnius Vet clinics. Please book in advance by phone on +370 5 215 4202 or online.
